Pure polyurea is the product of choice when lightweight yet robust theatre props are required. These polystyrene set pieces had to be weight-bearing, with a textured finish that could be painted to resemble stone.
Working with the design team, the props were first carved from polystyrene, then pure polyurea spray-applied in graphite grey. A flecked finish was created during application to create the perfect stone effect once painted by the designer. The polyurea coating gave the props strength and aesthetic value for this sell-out production of The Mentor.
Bristol Old Vic Theatre
The ethereal 'floating' staircase in this production of Medea at Bristol Old Vic had originally been designed in timber, but polystyrene coated with pure polyurea offered a lightweight solution with optimal tensile strength.
The staircase was constructed from adhered polystyrene blocks. With a tight production schedule, we saved time on any final paint application by spraying the entire staircase in a specially made white polyurea. Each step was securely bonded with the polyurea application, creating an exceptionally robust piece that required minimal support beneath. Thanks to the integrity of the polyurea coating, the actors were able to ascend higher up the stairs than originally planned - heightening the dramatic effect!
